A pickaxe is a tool that is required to mine most types of stone, ore, and blocks crafted from stone or ore. Unlike other tools, the tier of a pickaxe determines which blocks it can mine successfully.
Variants
There are eight pickaxe variants:
Heliorite Pickaxe
Endurium Pickaxe
Palladium Pickaxe
Jurassoline Pickaxe
Cinnabar Pickaxe
Nebular Pickaxe
Mithril Pickaxe
Astral Pickaxe
Obtaining
Upgrading
A Netherite Pickaxe can be Upgraded in a Smithing Table with either an Heliorite or Endurium Upgrade Template and their respective Pickaxe Heads
Crafting
Palladium and Jurassoline Pickaxes are crafted using 2 Fossilized Bones and 3 identical units of tool material. Cinnabar and Nebular Pickaxes are crafted using 2 Reinforced Tool Rods and 3 identical units of tool material. The Mithril Pickaxe is crafted using 2 Fancy Tool Rods and 3 Mithril Ingots.
Mithril Forging
The Astral Pickaxe is forged at night under direct skylight in a Mithril Anvil using a Mithril Pickaxe and an Astral Ingot.
Usage
Mining
A pickaxe is used to break stone-based and metal-based materials faster. Different qualities of pickaxe are required to successfully harvest certain ores and blocks. For example, while stone can be mined with any pickaxe, cinnabar ore for example must be mined with a Palladium / Jurassoline Pickaxe or higher, or else the player harvests no item.
Extraction
A new feature of the Mod is the addition of a tool tier based default enchantment called "Extraction". Cinnabar, Nebular, Mithril and Astral Pickaxes gain this enchantment on crafting, whilst still being able to be aditionally enchanted afterwards inside of a Enchanting Table, or an Anvil. This new enchantment allows the user to right click any ores from the base game, the mod itself and a few others, if they are tagged inside of "tlotd/tags/blocks/extractable_blocks.json". Upon use, the item will drop as if mined without silk touch or looting, leaving either the stone type or air behind and damaging the tool. This action does not take mining time into account and can be used to extract mithril out of bedrock.
Durability
Each tier of pickaxe has a different Durability, or number of uses, based on the type. Breaking a block with a pickaxe consumes one durability point. No durability is consumed for blocks that break instantly, like torches and flowers.
The following table shows the number of uses per pickaxe type:
| Material | Durability |
|---|---|
| 2324 | |
| 2324 | |
| 2612 | |
| 2612 | |
| 3418 | |
| 3418 | |
| 4096 | |
| ∞ |
Weapon
A pickaxe loses 2 points of durability when used as a weapon. Pickaxes may be used as a weapon, and in Java Edition, they have an attack speed higher than that of an axe, shovel, or trident, but lower than that of a sword or mace.
Pickaxes have an attack speed of 1.2 and take 0.85 seconds to recover.

- ↑ The formula to find the total lifetime damage is
ceil(durability ÷ 2) × damage per hit. The durability is halved then ceiled because pickaxes take double durability when used as a weapon, and the last 1 durability can also deal damage. The formula also ignores enchantments and critical hits, and assumes each attack is performed at maximum charge.

Pickaxes can be repaired in an anvil by adding units of the tier's repair material, with each repair material restoring 25% of the pickaxe's maximum durability, rounded down.
Enchantments
A pickaxe can receive the following enchantments:
| Name | Description | Max Level | Method | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Efficiency | Increases the mining speed. | V | 10 | |
| Fortune[note 2] | Increases the amount of drops when mining. | III | 2 | |
| Silk Touch[note 2] | Causes blocks to drop themselves when mined. | I | 1 | |
| Unbreaking | Grants a chance to negate durability consumption. | III | 5 | |
| Mending | Repairs the pickaxe when obtaining experience. | I | 2 | |
| Curse of Vanishing | The pickaxe vanishes on death, not dropping as an item. | I | 1 |
